How to protect your skin in the cold winter months?

How to protect your skin in the cold winter months?

You may have noticed that the colder months bring a bout of dryer skin. It gets itchy, and flaky and it feels like not matter how much you apply moisturizer, you just can’t seem to combat your dry skin. Here are a few things you can do to protect your skin health during the dry winter months.
A proper skincare routine: It is so important to have a proper skin care routine, but it is especially important in the harsher weather i.e., the cold. You may already have a go to skin care routine but adjusting it to the weather is important. Your skin may be a little more sensitive in the colder months so you may need to simplify your routine. Make sure you are using products with natural ingredients and for sensitive skin make sure your products are fragrance free.
Anytime you are bathing, showering, or washing your hands make sure you apply moisturizer afterwards: You are stripping your skin of its natural oils every time you cleanse. Since those oils are vital to your skin health and hydration it is important that you replenish your natural oils to prevent dry skin. Make sure that you have a moisturizer on hand that works. Keep a small bottle in your purse when you are on the go. We are impartial to our oils but that is for another blog. Make sure your moisturizer is hydrating and doesn't dry you out further.
Not bathing or showering in hot water for too long: While it can be nice to take a hot shower in the colder months, taking hot showers for long periods of time can actually dry your skin out. When your skin is exposed to hot water for too long, it can strip your moisture barrier a lot quicker than if you use lukewarm water. Once you get out of the shower try to pat dry your skin instead of vigorously rubbing it, which can also strip the skin barrier of those beautiful natural oils.
Overnight Serum: As you adjust your skin care routine to the colder winter months, adding an overnight serum is something to consider. A good serum can help retain moisture in the skin barrier and kick that dry winter skin. We are a big fan of Naked & Thriving Renew Resurfacing Night Serum, which has hyaluronic acid in it and feels oh so nice on the skin. Adding a hydrating face mask to your routine is helpful as well if you are not a fan of using night serums.
Wear a Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen EVERY DAY: It may be tempting to ditch your sunscreen in the winter months. Just because you see the sunlight for less time during the day, your skin can still get damaged from sun exposure. Especially if you spend a lot of time in the mountains, because you are closer to the sun. Wear sunscreen year-round. It is so important because harmful UV light can stress your skins moisture barrier and cause sun damage. Bottom line is protecting your skin from the sun!
Humidifier: Use a humidifier in the dryer winter months. It is so important to add as much moisture as you can into your daily routine, which means adding humidity while you sleep. Make sure to close the doors to the room you’re using it in, so you can keep the humidity in your space. You can buy larger humidifiers. They will tell you the size of the room they can humidify, so make sure you pay attention to that.
Using Oils instead of water-based products: Our skin is made up of natural oils so when we deplete those oils because of harsh winter weather or really hot showers we need to replenish them. Using oils can help you stay hydrated for longer than most water-based moisturizers can. Always keep moisturizer on you or near you so you can immediately replenish hydration to your skin any time you are washing your hands.
Not using scrubs or harsh cleaners: Since our skin is already sensitive in the cold weather adding a scrub or exfoliant to the mix can strip your skin of its natural oils causing it to dry out. You should be changing your skin care routine through the seasons and the winter season is one where you avoid the scrubs. You can get back to that in the summertime. If you do want to do a scrub, just do it less often, and try to find one that is a little gentler on the skin. Always make sure to moisturize afterwards.
Wear protective clothing when you go outside in the cold months: You may be one of those people that checks the weather before you go outside and thinks "meh it's not that cold". But even if it is a little cold wear gloves, a hat, and long sleeves. You can still get sun damage from the sun in the winter and the dry air on your skin can dry you out. Also wear gloves when you do the dishes since your hands will be in the hot water for an extended period, which as we know can really dry out your skin and deplete your natural oils. Especially if you have a lot of dishes to do.
Protecting your skin year-round is so important. As you get older you will thank your younger self for taking care of your biggest organ. In the meantime, if you are wanting a little extra hydration, check out our oils, which will keep you hydrated from head to toe.

Plant-Based Beauty: How To Use Oils as Your Moisturizer

Thinking about breaking up with your moisturizer this year? If so, you might consider making the switch to a facial oil as your skin’s primary source of hydration.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, oils are actually one of the most impactful ingredients in skincare, with the ability to support all skin types and integrate easily into any routine. To learn more about why oils work so well, and how to leverage the benefits for yourself, keep reading! We’re sharing all of our favorite tips and tricks in today’s blog.

The Many Benefits of Using Oil As Moisturizer

Benefit #1: Oils are packed with skin nutrition – As skincare ingredients go, few are as naturally effective and inherently nourishing as pure oil. Because the majority of oil-based ingredients are plant derived, they’re chock full of many of the nutrients skin needs to repair, rejuvenate, and carry out essential daily functions.

In particular, we love that oils are antioxidant rich, containing a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, as well as an ideal source of omegas and essential fatty acids. When applied directly to the skin, they provide an instant boost that's rarely replicated with synthetic ingredients.

Benefit #2: Oils absorb quickly and get to work ASAP – One major advantage to including oils into your skincare routine, in any capacity, is that they mimic the skin’s own naturally occurring oils – also known as sebum – in terms of weight, texture, and molecular composition.

What this means for applying botanical oils topically is that they are easily recognized and utilized by the skin. Oils such as squalane and jojoba are some of the most remarkably similar to natural sebum, making them a great choice. Or you can also opt for a blend of multiple oils for added nutrition and equally impactful results.

Benefit #3: Oils promote balance and optimal function – A common myth or misconception surrounding the use of oils is that applying them will cause the skin to become more oily. However, the way oil works with the skin is actually much more nuanced and synergistic.

Regardless of how dry or oily your skin is to begin with, something incredible about the epidermis is its ability to react to external factors and adjust accordingly. In most cases, application of oil-based products topically can be very helpful for supporting equilibrium, and regulating the body’s oil production cycles, allowing your skin to achieve a perfect balance.

Benefit #4: Oils layer well with your other favorite products – If you still love serums and moisturizing creams for your skin, some more good news is that you don’t have to give these products up. You can simply incorporate oils in place of, or alongside, other staples according to your skin’s needs, on a daily basis.

The versatility of most oil formulas makes them easy to apply before or after moisturizer and makeup if desired. You can also add a few drops to just about any facial care product as a way to keep your skin extra happy, healthy, and hydrated.

For Your Face: Tips for treating the skin with oil

One of the most common (and best!) ways to use botanical oils in skincare is for the face. If you aren’t already incorporating an oil or two into your routine, here’s what we recommend:

Tip #1: Look for oils that support your skin type – Because most botanical oils feature their own unique set of benefits, you may find it helpful to choose one according to your individual skin type and concerns.

Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to experiment with order of application – A question that comes up often when using facial oils is when to include them in your skincare ritual. Some experts recommend using oil as your last step – following cleansing and application of other products – whereas others assert that oil should be layered according to consistency, coming before thicker products like moisturizer or cream.

If you opt to use oil in place of moisturizer, you can simply layer it on as your finishing step before makeup and SPF. However, in the event that you do want to include moisturizer in the mix, we recommend trying both and seeing which approach yields the best results for your skin.

Tip #3: Stay consistent for best results – In order to really enjoy the benefits of facial oil, a best practice we suggest is making oil-based products the foundation of your everyday routine. The more often you are able to incorporate oil formulas, the easier it is for your skin to adjust and start reflecting positive results.

Oils can be used in the morning, or at night depending on your preference. However, you may actually find that they work best when used for both. For example, a few drops of oil can be added to your A.M. routine, followed by a more generous layer as the finishing step in your P.M. routine, which will allow your skin to soak up all of the benefits overnight.

For Your Body: How to use oils as your all over moisturizer

Besides using oils for the face, it’s worth mentioning that oil-based products are an amazing option for your entire body. If you have yet to add an oil step to your body care routine, here are a few pointers for getting started:

Tip #1: Make oil a part of your post-shower ritual – One of the best ways to utilize oil products for maximum absorption is to apply them to skin that is slightly damp. Right after showering tends to be a perfect time because the skin is already freshly cleansed, warm, and ready to absorb topical products.

To try this trick, we recommend applying a few drops or about a quarter size amount of oil to the palms of the hands and massaging the product gently into the skin until it is fully absorbed.

Tip #2: Treat yourself head to toe – One more thing to love about botanical oils and oil-based products is that they can be used just about anywhere on the body.

The hydrating and moisturizing properties of an oil can be equally effective for softening cracked heels on the feet, pampering the hands and cuticles, or even the hair and scalp to combat seasonal dryness. All you need is just a few drops and you’ll be good to glow!

Tip #3: Refresh and replenish as needed – Although dermatologists and other skincare professionals will tell you that applying oil to freshly cleansed skin works best, it can still be beneficial to use a little oil anytime your skin is feeling dry.

As long as your skin doesn’t feel overly greasy and your oil is quickly absorbed, that’s a sign that the product is being well-tolerated, and you can safely re-apply to keep your complexion nourished and ensure a long-lasting effect. Again, just a few drops are all you need to keep your skin moisturized for hours at a time.

Change Comes To The Cannabis Industry: How Biden’s Recent Reform Statements Could Reshape Business For The Better

Change Comes To The Cannabis Industry: How Biden’s Recent Reform Statements Could Reshape Business For The Better

The cannabis industry got some big news recently when President Joe Biden announced steps to begin overhauling cannabis laws, reviewing its classification as a Schedule 1 drug, pardoning anyone incarcerated for possession at the federal level, and encouraging governors to do the same at a state level.

In a statement released by the White House on October 6, the President outlined his stance that existing policies are not working, have unfairly impacted convicted individuals, and that current drug classifications are in need of further review.

“Federal law currently classifies marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, the classification meant for the most dangerous substances,” Biden’s statement reads. “This is the same schedule as for heroin and LSD, and even higher than the classification of fentanyl and methamphetamine – the drugs that are driving our overdose epidemic.”

Although it remains to be seen how this process will play out nationwide, many experts expect that changes are underway to reshape federal policy and pave the way for legalization, and legitimizing the cannabis industry as a whole.

In order to further understand why this news is significant, it's worth noting that cannabis has been considered a Schedule 1 substance since 1970, when the Federal government designated it as having no medicinal value and a high potential for abuse.

Nearly 40 years later, passage of the 2018 Farm Bill signaled a slight shift, legislating legalization of hemp-derived products – including CBD and products containing less that 0.3 percent THC. However, this is still a far cry from early American laws, which deemed cannabis as being completely legal and acceptable for medical use between 1840 and 1900.

Going forward there is still a lot of work to be done to reverse cannabis prohibition, however, progress is on the table with related legislation in the works. For example, the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act introduced into the Senate earlier this year, is a bill aimed at delisting cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act. If passed, the bill would additionally enable banking reform, criminal justice reform, and automatic expungement of federal records for nonviolent cannabis crimes.

Lastly, for brands that retail CBD, updating the current laws has the potential to change the landscape of doing business and benefit the entire industry. As the administration moves towards declassifying cannabis, we will likely experience more freedom to market hemp-derived products, access banking services, and expand operations without the heavy regulations currently hindering many enterprises.

Although it’s not a perfect solution, many in the industry see this as a win, and a step in the right direction.

As the president’s own missive asserts: “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrong
