What You Need to Know About Argan Oil

Published by Shelby Lavery on 12th Nov 2020

Argan oil is something very near and dear to our hearts, as it is one of the main ingredients in our Facial Glow Oil #8. This oil has so many benefits that are typically used in skin care and haircare products, and there’s a reason why.

What is Argan Oil?

Argan oil can be defined as a plant oil that is produced from the kernels of the argan tree, which is endemic to Morocco. According to Healthline, the oil has been a culinary staple in the country for centuries “not only because of its subtle, nutty flavor but also its wide array of potential health benefits.”

Throughout this article, we are going to share some of the benefits of moroccan argan oil, how the oil could help your skin, and why you should include it in your skincare routine.

Benefit #1: Essential Nutrients

According to Healthline, argan oil consists mainly of fatty acids and a wide variety of phenolic compounds. The majority of the fat content in argan oil comes from oleic and linoleic acid, and about 29-36% of fatty acids found in the oil comes from linoleic acid, otherwise known as omega-6, which makes it a particularly good source for this essential nutrient. Argan oil is also rich in vitamin E, which provides benefits for healthy skin, hair, and eyes. Vitamin E also contains powerful antioxidant properties, which we know is beneficial in multiple ways.

Benefit #2: Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

The variety of phenolic compounds found in argan oil are most likely responsible for the majority of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Since argan oil is rich in vitamin E, it serves as a potent antioxidant that works to reduce the damaging effects of free radicals. There is some current research that suggests that argan oil can be applied directly to your skin to reduce inflammation caused by injuries and infections. Other compounds found in argan oil that up its antioxidant capacity include CoQ10, melatonin, and plant sterols. There is also more research coming out that suggests that when argan oil is applied directly to the skin, it can reduce inflammation caused by injuries or infections.

Benefit #3: May Reduce Signs of Skin Aging

Argan oil has recently been used in skin care products, like ours, to reduce the signs of aging, which current research is beginning to support. Some research currently suggests that the intake of argan oil may help slow down the aging process by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. There is also other research that suggests argan oil may help to support repair and maintenance of healthy skin when applied directly to your skin, which may also reduce the physical signs of aging. One study found that argan oil, when ingested and directly applied to the skin, was effective in increasing skin elasticity and hydration in postmenopausal women.

Benefit #4: May Treat Some Skin Conditions

Argan oil has become a popular home remedy for treating inflammatory skin conditions, particularly in North Africa, where the argan tree originates. Although there is a lack of research surrounding this phenomenon, argan oil is still used quite frequently to treat skin conditions, specifically those dealing with inflammation. Current scientific research indicates that argan oil does contain anti-inflammatory compounds, which could potentially be the reason behind its use in treating certain skin conditions.

Benefit #5: May Moisturize Skin & Hair

The oleic and linoleic acids that constitute the majority of argan oil’s fat content are vital nutrients for maintaining healthy skin and hair. In one study, both oral and topical applications of the oil improved the moisture of the skin in postmenopausal women. Although there is limited research on the use of argan oil for hair health, some studies have indicated that plant oils similar in nutritional content to argan oil may help to reduce split ends and other types of hair damage.

Why You Should Use Argan Oil in Your Skin Care Routine
