New Year, New Skincare Routine

Published by Shelby Lavery on 11th Jan 2021

It’s the beginning of a new year, which means you probably have some new skincare goals you’re working toward right? Even if you haven’t thought about leveling up your skincare routine, that’s okay - it’s what we’re here for! We genuinely believe that everyone should be releasing their inner goddess every single day, which is why we’re going to help you along your journey toward glow worthy skin in 2021! In this article, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about what products you should have in your skincare routine, our best tips and tricks for glowing skin, and why clean beauty is essential to forming a good skincare routine.

Your Basic Skincare Routine

Whether you’re a skincare newbie or if you’re a seasoned skincare enthusiast, knowing the steps of a basic skincare routine is important. Every person’s skin is different, which means you’ll probably need to use different skincare products than your best friend does. Knowing your skin and experimenting with what works and what doesn’t is key to forming a skincare routine that is just as unique as you are.

Step One: Cleanse

The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing - aka washing your face. Cleansing your skin with a cleanser that isn’t too harsh on your skin sets your skin up perfectly for the rest of your routine. Cleansing your skin once to twice a day, depending on your skin type, ensures that any excess dirt, oil, or other impurities are washed away.

Step Two: Tone

We like to think of toning as our “not-so-secret” skincare hack. According to New York-based dermatologist Arielle Kauvar, “toner is like a primer for the rest of your skin-care routine like serums and moisturizer.” Toners are typically packed with skin-loving ingredients like acids, glycerin, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories, so adding this extra step to your skincare routine will definitely be worth it. If you do decide to include toner into your skincare regimen, make sure you use it right after cleansing your skin. Kauvar says that most of the molecules in toner “penetrate the skin better when it is wet, so applying active ingredients immediately after cleansing delivers better results.”

Step Three: Moisturize

We all know the importance of moisturization, especially during the winter. If you live in a drier climate like we do, moisturizing your skin is an absolute must. According to board-certified dermatologist Michele Farber, “No matter how oily or acne-prone your skin may feel, it will become dry without rehydration, and dried out skin is irritated skin.” Many dermatology experts agree that if you overwash your skin without moisturizing it properly, it will lead to an overproduction of oil on your skin. So bottom line? Moisturize your skin every single day.

Step Four: Protect

Every step of your skincare routine is important, but nothing is more important than sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen every single day will ensure that your skin is protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays. An important rule of thumb to follow when finding a daily sunscreen is to look for one that has an SPF of 30 or higher.

Tips and Tricks for Glowing Skin

You already know that we’re all about glow worthy skin, but is there actually a secret to getting it? Well, if you follow our skincare steps above you’re already halfway there! Our secret skincare weapon isn’t really that hard to guess, it’s a little cannabinoid called CBD, short for cannabidiol. Although the CBD skincare and beauty industry is growing exponentially fast, it’s also a very new industry. Despite this, research has shown that CBD might be effective in treating eczema and psoriasis in addition to acne. According to NYC-based aesthetician and founder of Ildi Pekar Wellness Studio, Ildi Pekar, CBD might help with skin concerns like inflammation, dryness, and free radical damage due to its supposed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Some more of our favorite tips to achieve glowing skin are:

  • Start slow and take your time when you’re figuring out your routine.
  • Take the time to really figure out what products work best for you - it might take your skin awhile to adjust to a new product.
  • ALWAYS moisturize and wear sunscreen - every day!
  • A good skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Having 3-4 go-to skincare products is all you really need.

Why Clean Beauty is Key

Clean beauty products are becoming more and more popular, and for good reason. Clean, sustainable beauty is the future for the beauty and skincare industry and we’re all for it. According to Who What Wear, clean beauty products are “formulated without toxic ingredients (natural or chemical) [and are] safe for human and environmental consumption.” This basically means that a beauty product is considered “clean” if it’s made with ingredients that are safe for humans and doesn’t harm the environment in any way. Just like it matters what you eat and decide to nourish your body with, it matters what skincare products you use on your face. You want to make sure you’re using products that contain ingredients that won’t harm your skin and will actually bring out your natural glow.

We hope this article has helped you form a new skincare routine that you can use all year long!
