When consuming any CBD product, you want to make sure you’re getting a potent product, especially when it comes to your skincare! Strength and potency go hand in hand, and are ultimately one of the most important determining factors when it comes to choosing a CBD product. First, let’s get back to the basics.
What is in Your CBD Product
CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of the major cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD infused oil is “a liquid product that consists of the cannabinoid CBD infused in a fatty carrier oil.” Carrier oils commonly come in the form of MCTs, or medium-chain triglycerides. Some common carrier oils include coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed hemp seed oil, and grapeseed oil, which happens to be the carrier oil found in our Facial Glow Oil #8.
In order to have an effective CBD infused oil, it must contain two essential ingredients: the CBD itself and a carrier oil, such as grapeseed oil. Most products on the market, including our facial oil, contain much more than those two ingredients. Depending on the source and extraction method of the CBD, CBD infused oils can include:
- Other cannabinoids, such as THC or CBG
- Terpenes, such as myrcene or limonene
- Other phytonutrients
- Added essential oils
Types of CBD
Ultimately, the strength and potency of CBD depends on how it is formulated. The strongest and purest form of CBD is called CBD isolate, which is created using solvents to extract CBD from every part of the cannabis plant, which produces a crystalized form of CBD that is usually at least 99% pure. CBD isolate is not an oil, but rather comes in powder form, as it is typically suspended in a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, in order to reach the desired concentration within the product.
On the other hand, there is also full spectrum CBD distillate. Full spectrum CBD distillate contains the largest range of other cannabinoids including THC.Broad spectrum CBD distillate on the other hand contains a broad spectrum of cannabinoids, but without the presence of THC.
Why Potency Matters
Higher potency in CBD distillate doesn’t necessarily mean a better product. It does mean you have to use less oil to get to your desired dosage. So, why does potency matter? Potency matters for a number of reasons. It is hard to get a firm grasp on this because of the biodiversity among humans, as well as our endocannabinoid systems. Although, according to Weed Maps, potency matters in three specific ways:
- From an efficacy standpoint, “the stronger a CBD oil is, the higher its potency, the more effects it’s going to produce.”
- The entourage effect: This is the idea that one cannabinoid works better and produces more true effects when in the presence of other cannabinoids, which makes the case for broad-spectrum versus isolates.
- From a regulation standpoint, it’s important to note that there are very little regulations on the CBD market, as cannabis is still a federally illegal substance, although hemp is legal nationwide as of 2018. In order to make sure you are getting a potent product, always source your CBD products from reputable sources and brands.
