A Beginner’s Guide to Skin Care

If you have no clue where to start when it comes to forming a skincare routine that works for you, you’re in the right place! On the other hand, if you’re a skincare expert you might find this guide useful in brushing up on your knowledge of all things skincare! So here it is, welcome to our Beginner’s Guide to Skin Care! We hope it helps you along your skincare journey.

Find a Routine That Works for You

There are so many blog posts, magazine articles, and Instagram influencers that will tell you to use certain skincare products or do a certain routine, but we’re here to tell you that this is something you need to figure out for yourself. Especially if you’re a skincare newbie, you’ll most likely need to try different products and routines until you land on one that works for you. According to board-certified dermatologist Divya Shokeen, her “most important skin-care advice would be to keep it simple.” Shokeen says to start with your basic skincare items, like cleansers and moisturizers, and “expand as you see fit.”

A skincare routine for beginners doesn’t have to be complicated, like the 12-step Korean skincare routines that have been gaining popularity recently. A basic skincare routine that makes your skin feel good is all you really need.

Step 1: Cleanse

If you’re asking yourself the question, “How to start a skincare routine?” cleansing is always the answer! Cleansing is the first step in any basic skincare routine and sets your skin up for the rest of your routine. There are many opinions out there on how many times you should wash your face, but there is a general consensus among skincare experts that twice a day is ideal. By washing your face once in the morning and once in the evening, it ensures that any excess oil, dirt, or other impurities are washed away. If your skin is on the drier side, simply splashing some water on your face in the morning is sufficient.

According to board-certified dermatologist Michele Farber, skincare beginners should choose a hydrating facial cleanser that is gentle on the skin. Farber also says when looking for a facial cleanser you should “look for one that is fragrance-free, has minimal ingredients (to avoid irritation), and has ceramides and glycerin to restore and maintain the skin barrier.”

Step 2: Tone

We personally believe that toner, when used correctly, can be your secret weapon in your skincare routine. According to Allure Magazine, toner is a skincare product that “looks like water and acts like water,” but we promise it’s not water. Most of the time, toners are packed with skin-loving ingredients like acids, glycerin, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories, so you’ll thank yourself later by adding this product to your skincare routine. According to New York-based dermatologist Arielle Kauvar, “toner is like a primer for the rest of your skin-care routine like serums and moisturizer.”

Licensed esthetician and co-founder of Soko Glam, Charlotte Cho, thinks of “toner as prep for your pores.” Cho says that toner “brings your skin back to its natural acidic state, sweeping impurities away and helping your skin absorb your skincare products. Your skin is like a dried-up sponge. If you put a thick cream on a brittle dry sponge, it won't accept it and it isn't 'prepped' for moisture. But if you wet the sponge, the cream will sink in more easily."

Just like cleansing, there are lots of opinions out there on when you should include toner in your skincare routine, but a general rule of thumb to follow is to use toner right after you’ve already cleansed your skin. Arielle Kauvar says that most of the molecules in toner “penetrate the skin better when it is wet, so applying active ingredients immediately after cleansing delivers better results.”

Step 3: Moisturize

Moisturizer is probably one of the most important ingredients in any skincare routine, especially if you have drier skin or live in a dry climate like Colorado. If you’re thinking “I don’t use moisturizer because I have oily skin,” reverse that thought! Michele Farber says that “No matter how oily or acne-prone your skin may feel, it will become dry without rehydration, and dried out skin is irritated skin.” Dermatology experts also say that if you overwash your skin without moisturizing it properly, it will lead to an overproduction of oil on your skin.

Finding a moisturizer that works for your skin is super important, especially if you’re brand new to the world of skincare, so play around with different products until you find something that works for you!

Step 4: Protect

All aspects of your skincare routine are important, but protection is definitely one of the most important steps that you shouldn’t overlook. According to Michele Farber, “Sunscreen is your first line of defense and protection against skin cancer. If you were to do nothing else for your skin, sun protection is the most important.” An important rule of thumb to follow when finding a daily sunscreen is to look for one that has an SPF of 30 or higher. Something to think about when choosing a sunscreen is if you want a mineral-based or chemical sunscreen, as both have different benefits.

Allure Magazine says, “Mineral sunscreens work as a shield, blocking the sun's rays from penetrating the skin, thanks to ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, protect the skin against UV rays by absorbing them, relying on ingredients such as octocrylene or avobenzone.” It all really depends on your skin type and what works best for you!
