A Beginner's Guide to Clean Beauty

Published by Shelby Lavery on 29th Dec 2020

Whether you’re new to the clean beauty world or if you’ve been playing with your mom’s makeup since you were a kid, you’re going to want to stick around for this one!

Clean beauty has become somewhat of a buzzword in recent years, with many household names and new brands alike jumping on the clean and sustainable beauty bandwagon. In this made-for-you guide, we’re going to break down what clean beauty actually is, why it matters, and what you should look out for when purchasing beauty and skincare products.

What is Clean Beauty?

According to Who What Wear, clean beauty can be defined as products that are “formulated without toxic ingredients (natural or chemical) [and are] safe for human and environmental consumption.” This basically means that a beauty product is considered “clean” if it’s made with ingredients that are safe for humans and doesn’t harm the environment in any way.

Due to confusion in the beauty and skincare industry, as well as a lack of transparency, different terms and phrases related to clean beauty have been popping up as well. These terms can mean different things depending on who you ask, but here at Eossi Beauty we are committed to being fully transparent on how we define these terms from our brand’s perspective.

SUSTAINABLE/GREEN BEAUTY

Beauty and skincare products labeled as “sustainable” and/or “green” typically contain ingredients that are sustainably and ethically sourced. Brands that use this label usually have recyclable and/or biodegradable packaging as well.

VEGAN

Brands that use this label for their products must be sure that their products contain absolutely no animal products or byproducts that come from animals.

NATURAL

Products labeled “natural” should have plant-derived ingredients and should be formulated with absolutely no synthetic ingredients.

ORGANIC

Brands and companies that use this label should have ingredients in their products that were made and/or grown without the use of pesticides and/or growth enhancers.

NON-TOXIC

Ingredients that are non-toxic can be naturally-derived or synthetically made, but do not contain anything that could be toxic to humans or the environment.

CRUELTY-FREE

Brands and companies that claim their products are cruelty-free are saying that their products and ingredients have not been tested on animals at any point in the research and development phase.

As you can see, there’s a lot that goes into clean beauty, so knowing the difference between each of these terms is important to know when shopping for clean beauty and skincare products.

Why Clean Beauty Matters

This should go without saying, but it matters what you put on your face. Just like you care about the types of food you eat and what you put in your body, you should care about the types of beauty and skincare products you use on your face and the rest of your skin. Products that use clean, sustainable ingredients are usually better for your skin anyways, and you can also feel good about supporting companies that care about providing their customers with these kinds of products.

We already wrote an article about why sustainability in the beauty industry matters, but now we’re here to talk about why clean beauty in this industry matters. Most of the time, clean and sustainable products go hand-in-hand - if you’re getting one, you’re probably getting the other. Although, clean products can be different from sustainable products, like we mentioned above. As a little reminder, clean beauty products are “formulated without toxic ingredients (natural or chemical) [and are] safe for human and environmental consumption.”

On a very basic level, clean beauty matters because you want to be using products that contain ingredients that are good and nourishing for your skin. You don’t want to be using products that are toxic or will do harm to your skin. Products that use these types of ingredients usually age your skin prematurely as well. We believe that the beauty and skincare industry needs to continue moving forward with the clean/sustainable beauty trend, as this type of business model is good for consumers and the environment. You want to feel good about the products you’re using, and we want you to know that we fully support that mentality here at Eossi Beauty.

What to Look Out For

Now that you know what clean beauty is and why it matters, you should know what ingredients to look out for when choosing makeup and skincare products. Some of these ingredients might surprise you, so make sure to take notes or save this article for future reference!

FORMALDEHYDE

Yes, you read that right. Formaldehyde is typically known as the chemical substance used in the embalming process but it can still be found in beauty and skincare products. There has been years of research concluding that formaldehyde is a carcinogen, so you’ll definitely want to watch out for this one. There are also ingredients that slowly form formaldehyde over time, including:

  • bronopol
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • diazolidinyl urea
  • imidazolidinyl urea
  • Quaternium-15

Keep an eye out for these ingredients, you don’t want to be accidentally putting formaldehyde on your face if those products sit in your bathroom cabinet for too long.

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES

If you see a product ingredient label with the words “fragrance” or “parfum” it typically is a coverup for the chemical ingredients companies aren’t required to disclose - your best bet is to stay away from these types of products.

MINERAL OIL

Also known as paraffin, mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum. According to Byrdie, mineral oil and other petroleum byproducts contain carcinogenic properties.

TRICLOSAN

As an antimicrobial ingredient found in many beauty and skincare products, we thought this ingredient was worth mentioning. According to an article published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, triclosan has been linked to significant impacts on the thyroid and reproductive hormones.

We hope this article was helpful in your understanding of clean beauty, why it matters, and what ingredients you should avoid! We want you to be as confident as possible in the products you use, which is why we’re staying committed to being fully transparent about issues like this.
