5 Ways to Be More Mindful in Your Everyday Life

Published by Shelby Lavery on 16th Feb 2021

It’s no surprise that mindfulness has become a trending topic recently, and we are absolutely here for it. Mindfulness is something that we try to incorporate into our daily lives, and recently we’ve been trying to be more intentional about the specific mindfulness techniques we use on a daily basis - which is what we’re going to share with you today!

In this article, we’re going to cover five ways you can practice mindfulness every single day without seriously changing up your routine. So settle in and get ready to learn how to be more mindful!

Just Breathe

The simplest way to be more mindful throughout your day is to simply breathe with intention (aka connecting with your breath). When you feel stressed or if you notice that your mind is starting to drift off as you go about your daily task list, take a few moments to do some deep breathing. According to PsychCentral, practicing mindfulness through diaphragmatic breathing (breathing into your diaphragm) helps make your breathing become more shallow and you “truly do feel better” after this practice.

Holistic health practitioner and expert, Dr. Andrew Weil, is a big advocate for the “4:7:8 breath” which involves breathing in through your nose for 4 seconds, holding that breath for 7 seconds, and “then gently exhaling through your mouth for 8 seconds.” After doing this breathing exercise a few times, you’ll feel a lot calmer and more present in your body so you can get back to working through your daily routine.

Connect By Disconnecting

We all know that we probably spend a little too much time on our phones and connected to our devices - probably more so now that we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. Sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in the news cycle and before you know it, you’ve been scrolling mindlessly for 2 hours. One way to be more mindful throughout the day is reconnect with yourself by disconnecting from your phone for a certain amount of time.

If you are able to, try putting some “no-phone time” into your schedule that makes sense for you. This can be for five minutes during your lunch break at work or during an afternoon walk, but taking some “no-phone time” throughout your day will help you be more mindful and productive.

Focus on One Thing at a Time

We know many of you out there consider themselves experts at multitasking (and we’re sure you are), but as human beings we’re really only meant to focus on one thing at a time. If we’re trying to focus on multiple things at once, we aren’t giving our full attention to any one thing, which probably means we aren’t doing everything to our best ability. Being mindful of what tasks are more important than others and learning how to prioritize is one of the best ways to stay mindful throughout the day, specifically when it comes to tackling your to-do list.

Have Fun & Allow Yourself to Play

Letting your inner child out to play sometimes (or all the time) is one of the best ways to stay mindful throughout your day and your overall life. According to PsychCentral, people who consistently practice mindfulness “are open to new experiences, and know how to have fun. This happens when they have a good work-life balance, and are able to be in the present moment.”

By being mindful of your own needs, mentally, physically, and emotionally, you will likely be less stressed, happier, and able to focus better. Allowing yourself the time to play and have fun is so important in your mindfulness journey and everyday mindfulness practice as well.

Stay Present

The main purpose of having an everyday mindfulness practice is to cultivate the ability to stay present in any given moment, especially the important ones. When you find your mind drifting off to something that happened in the past or planning every future move, take a few deep breaths and ground yourself in the present moment. All we really have is the present moment, so we might as well be present for it!

We hope these tips helped and we hope you’re feeling confident and empowered to go out into the world with a little more mindfulness!
